Course Prescription

What is Mathematics Education research, and how can it inform practice? This course introduces a range of skills and methods for conducting and critically consuming research in mathematics education. Students will explore issues and techniques in Mathematics Education research as they design their own research studies to inform their teaching and learning practice.

Course Overview

In this course, we will explore what research in mathematics education means and looks like. Through critically reflecting on seminal works and theories that have shaped our field, we will make connections between methodological and theoretical considerations in designing and conducting mathematics education research.

Students may wish to take this course if they are interested in: 

  • Broadening their understanding of what it means to do research in mathematics education
  • Reflecting on mathematics education research practices in order to enhance their teaching of mathematics 
  • Preparing a postgraduate research proposal in mathematics education
  • Developing their ability to communicate ideas in writing

This course can be taken as part of an MProfStuds(Mathematics Education), PGDipSci, BSc(Hons), or as preparatory work for postgraduate research.

The skills developed in this course are particularly useful for those wishing to pursue or further a career in mathematics education research or mathematics teaching.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify, explain and evaluate different concepts, theories, and methodologies in mathematics education research (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Construct clear, reasoned, logical arguments based on critical reflection on mathematics education research (Capability 1, 2 and 4)
  3. Design and communicate research studies on the teaching and/or learning of mathematics (Capability 1, 4 and 6)
  4. Create written essays that demonstrate academic integrity and use appropriate referencing and citation (Capability 4 and 5)
  5. Work collaboratively and constructively to offer useful, respectful critiques of peers' work (Capability 4, 5 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 30 hours of course sessions and 120 hours of independent study.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.
Learning activities including seminars will not be available as recordings.
The course may include live online events including group discussions.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

All readings will be made available on Canvas.

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.

At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.
