Course Prescription

The engineering design process as a teamwork and problem-solving activity involving analysis, synthesis, evaluation and critical thinking. Design methodology and communicating design intent through written and graphical means. Introduction to selected motive power sources, machine elements for mechanical power systems, and production and fabrication processes.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply theories of work, power and efficiency to mathematically model mechanical systems for analysis and design. (Capability 1.1 and 3.1)
  2. Analyse problems relating to bearings and select appropriate bearings and lubrication methods in a design context. (Capability 1.1 and 3.1)
  3. Apply systematic mechanical concept design methods in a stage-based design process, in projects that involve mathematical modelling, teamwork and design communication. (Capability 1.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2 and 4.1)
  4. Understand the working principles, key governing relationships, and typical applications of some types of electric motor, and be able to select appropriate motors in a design context. (Capability 1.1 and 3.1)
  5. Create solutions to routine machine design problems, that integrate machine elements selected from manufacturers' catalogs with some custom designed parts. (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 3.1 and 3.2)
  6. Understand power transmission elements including shafts, gears, belt and chain drives and be able to complete calculation and selection tasks in a design context. (Capability 1.1 and 3.1)
  7. Create and interpret sets of mechanical engineering drawings including tolerances, limits and fits. (Capability 2.1 and 4.2)
  8. Evaluate various linkage mechanisms and their motions and be aware of how some mechanisms may be used in a design context. (Capability 1.1 and 3.1)
  9. Recognise and specify appropriate welds and surface finishes/coatings with regard to design conditions (Capability 1.1 and 2.1)
  10. Find external information, e.g. in manufacturers' catalogs and online, and reflect on its relevance to a problem at hand (Capability 2.1 and 3.1)

Students must sit the exam to pass the course. Otherwise, a DNS result will be returned.

A minimum pass mark of 40% is also required in the exam to pass the course.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, each week you can expect 3 hours of lectures, 2 hours of tutorials, and 5 hours of reading and thinking about the content and work on assignments, projects, labs and/or preparation for quizzes and the exam.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

3 x 1-hr lectures each week

2 x 1-hr design office tutorial each week

4 x 2-hr laboratory sessions during the semester,

Attendance is required/expected at scheduled activities including labs/tutorials to complete and for labs, receive credit for, components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials/labs will not be available as recordings.

The course will include live online events including tutorials.

Attendance on campus is required for the exam.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Health & Safety

Lab inductions must be completed.  Students are expected to adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Health and Safety section of the Engineering Undergraduate Handbook.

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
