Course Prescription

Fundamentals of digital control and signal processing as applied to mechatronics systems. Modelling and analysis of mechatronics systems that includes transducers and applications. Issues related to mechatronics systems such as thermal management, signal detection, filtering and integrity, etc.

Course Overview

1. Digital Signal Processing - Digital system, z-transform, digital filter design, statistics for DSP, real world applications. 
2. Digital Control Systems - Closed loop system, Continuous to discrete system, digital controller design, iterative feedback tuning, digital control implementation. 
3. Electronics in power systems and device thermal management - power electronics, heat transfer theory, cooling techniques. 
4. Digital Signal Integrity - transmission lines, impedance matching, PCB, grounding, probing.
5. Electromagnetic Compatibility - emission, interference, design for EMC.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Understand and apply mathematical theories to describe, analyse the behaviour of discrete-time systems for the design and implementation of digital filters. (Capability 3.1, 3.2, 4.1 and 4.2)
  2. Understand and apply the knowledge gain on the various theories of digital control into a mechatronics system. (Capability 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1 and 6.1)
  3. Understand and apply knowledge of thermal management, signal integrity and electromagnetic interference for the design of reliable mechatronics systems. (Capability 3.2 and 5.1)

Students must sit the exam to pass the course. Otherwise, a DNS (did not sit) fail grade will be returned.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. 

For each week of this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, a 2 hour lab work, 1 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 4 hours of work on assignments and 1 hour for test/exam preparation.

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at lab activities to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. 
Attendance on campus is required for the test.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
