Course Prescription

A variety of engineering projects requiring the development and communication of design solutions to a professional standard, and using a wide range of advanced engineering methods.

Topic Summary
Each student will complete two design projects from several on offer. Depending on which projects are completed, some of the following topics may be covered.
  1. Loudspeaker design project
      - Acoustics
      - Loudspeaker design
      - Acoustic testing
  2.  Wind powered vehicle design project
      - Preliminary aerodynamic and power train design of a wind turbine powered vehicle 
      - Build a model which demonstrates that wind turbine driven vehicles can drive themselves forward into a headwind 
      - Test the model in the wind tunnel  
  3.  Mechanical design projects
      - Needs Analysis
      - Quality Function Deployment
      - Risk and the design process
      - Presentation skills
      - Materials selection

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply principles studied in lecture courses, using engineering methods for the design of mechanical products and/or processes (Capability 1.1, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1 and 4.2)
  2. Apply methods including QFD, Kano analysis and DFMEA to ensure the quality of a mechanical design (Capability 3.1 and 3.2)
  3. Work collaboratively and individually in a professional way to complete advanced mechanical design projects (Capability 1.1, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1 and 6.2)
  4. Present and discuss an engineering design proposal in an oral presentation session and in written form (Capability 4.2)
  5. Understand and apply key principles in a specialised area of mechanical design, depending on which project(s) are done

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. For this course, much of the time will be spent on project work, that is guided through tutorials and lectures. The number of lectures and tutorials per week will vary throughout the semester and depending on which of the projects are done by the student. Time will also be spent in fabrication, testing and presentation of design solutions.

Campus Experience

Lectures, design office tutorials and build/test activities, numbers of which will vary throughout the semester according to the specific project(s) each student is doing. 

Attendance is required/expected at scheduled activities including labs/tutorials/clinics to complete/receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Health & Safety

Lab inductions required.  Students are expected to adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Health and Safety section of the Engineering Undergraduate Handbook.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
