Course Prescription

Explores the connections between visual expression, cinematic storytelling and commercial persuasion. Students analyse promotional posters, advertising copy and video-based advertisements before creating their own persuasive media projects. This course offers a thorough introduction to advertising strategies and industrial practices, and develops students’ skills in promotional messaging and audiovisual storytelling.

Course Overview

This course explores the connections between visual expression, cinematic storytelling and commercial persuasion. Students analyse film posters, print advertising copy and television commercials before going on to create their own persuasive media projects (a film poster, a long-copy print ad, and a an animatic for a television commercial). This course offers a thorough introduction to advertising strategies and industrial practices, and develops students’ skills in persuasive messaging and audiovisual storytelling. 

Through project-based and written assignments, this course investigates the rhetorical relationships between text, images and stories. Students will produce critical insights by analysing film posters, long copy print ads, and commercials, and apply these insights as they work on creative advertising projects. They will develop persuasive writing and design skills, alongside the directorial skills needed for preparing a short audiovisual commercial.

Prerequisite: 15 points at Stage I in Media and Screen Studies, and 30 points passed Restriction: COMMS 309, MEDIA 338

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of persuasive writing and design skills (Capability 1.2)
  2. Apply visual storytelling techniques (Capability 1.2)
  3. Demonstrate practical communication and technical skills designed with an awareness of industry practice. (Capability 2.3)
  4. Have the ability to critically analyse persuasive media; specifically, film posters, long-copy print advertising, and 30 second television commercials. (Capability 2.1)
  5. Have the ability to produce coherent, cohesive and considered arguments regarding concepts, texts and contexts in the field of communication, drawing on evidence to support these arguments (Capability 4.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1 hour tutorial, 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content, and 4 hours of work on assignments.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled lectures, including tutorials, to complete the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Tutorials will not be available as recordings for privacy reasons.
The course will not include live online events.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.
