MEDIA 713 : Media, Sound and Music

Course Prescription

Interdisciplinary scholarship on sound and music media. Topics include: listening and soundscapes; noise/music; popular culture; the politics of sound and music; audio technologies; affect, feelings and emotions; identities; stardom, celebrity and fandom; voices; material cultures; audiovisual media; social media; and the political economy of music.

Course Overview

This seminar-style course concentrates on approaches to sound and music in media studies and communication, sound studies and cultural studies. We focus on contemporary debates about audio and audiovisual media technologies, sound in recording, film, television, video and social media, aural cultures, the materiality of media, the political economy of music, and sustainability of music media. The course topics include: listening; sound technologies; voices; radio; podcasts; audiovision; music platforms; sounds, songs and playlists; artists and fans; music scenes; material cultures and archives. 

This is not a lecture course. Students are expected to read several articles/chapters every week and write 500 words of a reading response every week for discussion in class. Students also pursue a relevant research project of their choice through various stages -- discussion in class, a 500-word research proposal, a 10-minute classroom presentation with questions and answers, and a 5000-word final research paper.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  3. Develop critical and creative research and writing skills on sound media (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30-point course. The University of Auckland imagines students spend 20 hours per week on a 30-point course.

You can expect 3 hours of  class time each week. The rest of the time you can devote to the course should be spent reading, listening, viewing, thinking and writing about the course content for assessment.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required in class. Classes will not be recorded. The activities for the course are scheduled as a 3-hour seminar. This course is not available for delivery to students studying remotely outside NZ in 2022.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Academic Integrity
