Course Prescription

The impact of employment relationships on organisational performance and employee well-being. Principles of staffing, employee development, performance management, reward, diversity management, and employment negotiation.

Course Overview

This course explores how strategic management of people is essential to the survival and growth of organisations. We will examine the multiple theoretical underpinnings of human resource management (HRM) and evaluate the role of HR professionals and line managers, as these groups are central to the way in which HRM policies and practices are developed and enacted in the workplace. Fundamental HRM practices, including talent sourcing and management, performance management, learning and development, reward management, and employment relations, will be addressed. In doing so, we will analyse the ongoing challenges for organisations in attracting, selecting, developing, and retaining employees. And, finally, applying the principles of people management, we examine how to transform organizational culture and lead change.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Explain, evaluate and apply theory and research on the employment relationship and on employee performance and wellbeing in organisations. (Capability 3.1, 3.2, 4.1 and 4.2)
  2. Explain, evaluate and apply theory and research on the major HRM processes and how to improve them. (Capability 1.1, 2.2, 3.1 and 4.1)
  3. Actively contribute to teamwork to produce a well-researched and impactful presentation. (Capability 6.1, 6.2 and 7.1)
  4. Plan and write a well-argued essay applying the theory and research in the course. (Capability 5.1 and 6.2)
  5. Identify, explain and evaluate ethical issues in HR policy and practice. (Capability 8.1 and 8.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard  15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1-hour workshop, and 7 hours of reading and thinking about the content and work on group/individual assignments.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities will not necessarily work well as recordings.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Online Readings: The essential readings can be accessed in Canvas. Where there is a link to a journal article or book chapter, please download and read the full PDF version, which is better for the diagrams and for discussion.
Together, the key resources for the course are the online readings, the lecture slides and the lecture recordings, including the links to useful videos. These are vital to your learning and your understanding of them will make a major impact on your performance.

Student Feedback
