Course Prescription

Effective marketing communication across an array of platforms and channels is key to business success. Examines marketing communications research, with an emphasis on digital communication. Explores how technology is impacting consumers and firms and the dynamics between them. The course develops students' ability to understand and critique research in marketing communications, critical thinking, and research skills.

Course Overview

An examination of current and emerging research in advertising and communications, this practical course examines relevant research as it relates to the receiving and processing of advertising messages, and the creation and sharing of user-generated content. By examining various points of view, students should have a better understanding of the theoretical and applied issues involving the use of advertising, and the media selection and creative execution of advertising programs.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Critically evaluate the role of creativity and the role of consumers in modern communications (Capability 1, 2 and 3)
  2. Investigate practices of advertising literacy, creation and reception (Capability 1, 2 and 4.3)
  3. Identify the technological and societal changes that affect the processing and impact of marketing communications (Capability 1, 2 and 6)
  4. Assess the changing roles of technology (e.g. social media, internet, mobile) and their integration within marketing communications (Capability 1 and 2)
  5. Critically evaluate different methods for qualitatively and quantitatively measuring media audiences (Capability 1, 2 and 3)
  6. Critically assess the role of ‘new’ technology and channels and their effect on marketing Communications and audience members. (Capability 1, 2 and 6)
  7. Develop advanced skills in team work, time management and communication. (Capability 4.3, 5.1 and 5.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content prior to class, 3 hours of class, and 4 hours of work on assignment and test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities such as classes, tests, and presentations to receive credit for components of the course.

Portions of classes will be available as recordings. Other learning activities such as in class workshops will not be available as recordings. Therefore regular attendance is important.

The course will not include live online events unless necessitated by health and safety situations.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
