Course Prescription

Examines advertising, with an emphasis on digital communication. Explores how digital trends, such as social media and influencers, are impacting the dynamics between consumers and firms. Develops students' critical thinking and research skills and their ability to develop solutions to advertising challenges.

Course Overview

Effective marketing communication across multiple platforms and channels is key to business success. Examines marketing communications research, with an emphasis on digital communication. Explores how technology is impacting consumers and firms and the dynamics between them. The course develops students' ability to understand and critique research in marketing communications, their critical thinking and research skills and their ability to develop research-informed solutions to advertising challenges.

  3. Critically analyse the role of technology and their effect on advertising. (Capability 1 and 2)
  4. Develop the most suitable solutions for a given research opportunity in marketing communications. (Capability 3, 4.2 and 5.1)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

Each week, you can expect 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content before class, 3 hours of lectures, and 4 hours of work on assignments.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience or Online

This course is offered in two delivery modes:

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at weekly classes to ensure students are developing their skills and master the content of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings but are not a substitute for attendance. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Online

The course may include live online events including group discussions and workshops and these will be recorded.
Attendance on campus is not required.
Study material will be released progressively throughout the course via Canvas.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

This course was extremely well received by students in 2021. As a result, the course has not undergone any major changes. Feedback from 2022 students will be considered in revising the course for its next delivery in 2023.

Academic Integrity
