Course Prescription

A critical investigation into modern-day music learning, production and consumption. Issues arising in a music landscape mediated by technology and hegemonic political economy will be examined with a focus on the interrogation of power relations using a social justice lens. Topics may include technology in music education, music and Artificial Intelligence, music decolonisation, and music streaming platforms.

Course Overview

This course aims to expose postgraduate music students to social and political issues in music creation and consumption using the lenses of contemporary critical theory. The course will investigate the power relation between musicians, listeners, and music corporations, focusing on how they are mediated by different technology and the dominant political economy. Students will be presented with one or more case studies that include topics like technology in music education, music and Artificial Intelligence, music taste and algorithmic recommendation, music decolonisation, and democratisation of music making.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of critical theory (Capability 1)
  2. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of the social and political issues affecting the contemporary music landscape (Capability 1)
  3. Critically evaluate the evolving landscape of music technology (Capability 1, 2 and 6)
  4. Being able to identify manifest and latent instances of the power imbalance between musicians and music corporations (Capability 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6)
  5. Recognise and reflect upon the hegemonic music theories and tools for composition, analysis, and performance (Capability 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6)
  6. Develop ability to take independent critical positions in matters regarding contemporary music creation and consumption; (Capability 2 and 5)
  7. Develop writing skills and ability to communicate ideas in oral presentation (Capability 4 and 5)

Assignment extensions might be approved only in exceptional circumstances. Late assignments that do not have an approved extension will be penalised 10% for each day or part thereof. No assignment will be accepted after that assignment has been returned to students.

Teaching & Learning Methods

The course entails 2-hour and 1-hour tutorials per week. Three writing retreats will be organised to support students in their writing tasks.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, students can expect 12 hours of attendance at in-person tutorials, 24 hours of in-person lectures,  114 hours of reading and thinking about the content and working on assignments.

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including tutorials.
