Course Prescription

Music community and/or pedagogy music research project. Includes fieldwork in music industry, community, school, or studio contexts and a research report.

Course Overview

This course provides the opportunity for students to pursue independent research culminating in a project in or related to an authentic music education setting or a contemporary music education topic of their choice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Plan, prepare and implement an advanced music education research project. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  2. Maintain a high expectation of self-motivated research and study. (Capability 3 and 5)
  3. Demonstrate the ability to discuss and analyse the project in written form. (Capability 1, 2 and 4)
  4. Demonstrate the capacity to communicate to an audience the musical/pedagogical intention of theproject. (Capability 1 and 4)
  5. Engage with confidence as a musician/community artist/educator with artistic and ethical integrity inrelevant practical situations.

Teaching & Learning Methods

Individual and/or group supervisory classes and group seminars will be provided to support independent work.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week involved in each 30 point course that they are enrolled in. For this course, you can expect up to 12 hours of supervision, as requested, usually, up to an hour a week. There may also be up to  8  hours of group seminars. The remainder of the time will be devoted to individual research and project work.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Academic Integrity
