Course Overview

This course provides music scholars with professional-level skills that will enable them to carry out postgraduate music
research, through a process of musicological supervision.

Course Requirements

Prerequisite: Departmental approval To complete this course students must enrol in MUS 786 A and B

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Engage confidently with the literature surrounding the topic of their choice. (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 5)
  2. Demonstrate the ability to write comprehensively about a musical topic. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)

Teaching & Learning Methods

As work at this level consists of supervision by a highly experienced and qualified research practitioner, much of the students’ progress is determined by their ability to apply principles and to work independently between supervisions.

The student should expect access to his/her supervisor on a regular basis, with a total of approximately 24 hours of contact time (12 hours in each semester).

Workload Expectations

As a 90-point course, students should put in approximately 900 hours of work over the course of their enrolment.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience or Online

As an individually-supervised course, campus experience is expected to be the default but supervision can be arranged to happen online with the prior approval of the supervisor and the School of Music Manutaki Postgraduate Studies.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Reading and other materials depend on the topic the student chooses to study. Students will be guided by the supervisor, but are expected to develop their own reading lists.

Health & Safety

The School of Music takes the mental and physical wellbeing of its students and staff seriously. If you are aware of a situation in which someone’s welfare is compromised, you must alert the Course Coordinator. The University counselling service can offer advice on mental health. Student Disability Services can advise and advocate for students with medical disabilities. Please liaise with SDS about disability accommodations well in advance of assignment due dates or tests.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Academic Integrity

The work that a student submits for grading must be the student's own work, reflecting their learning. Where work from other sources is used, it must be properly acknowledged and referenced.
