Course Prescription

A core course in the postgraduate programme in Operations and Supply Chain Management. Provides a deeper understanding of managing internal and external supply chains. Importance of language processing in proactive improvement is emphasised.

Course Overview

The ultimate objective of the course is to help students prepare a viable research proposal that will be further developed into a thesis in the area of Operations Management, broadly defined. In this course, learning is primarily based on readings, critical reflection, reviewing different research outputs, and writing your own research proposal. The required readings will be of different types such as academic literature reviews, original research articles, case studies, conceptual methodology chapters from the handbooks, theses and dissertations.  Students will communicate their findings and ideas using different means of communication: written reviewer report, oral presentation, in-class discussion, and the dissertation proposal.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of of Operations Management as a field of research, its main areas and most widely used research methods (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4.1, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2 and 6)
  2. Identify a research gap by conducting a comprehensive literature review (Capability 1, 2, 4.2, 5.1 and 5.2)
  3. Critically evaluate a piece of research and write a virtuous review (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4.2, 5.1 and 5.2)
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of of different types of research contribution (Capability 1 and 2)
  5. Evaluate the relevance of different research problems (Capability 5.1, 5.2 and 6)
  6. Write and present a research proposal (Capability 1, 2, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1 and 5.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, 4 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities to complete/receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars/tutorials/labs/studios will not be available as recordings.
The course may include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the test/exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

The list of required readings will be available on Canvas. To access some of the readings such as case studies students will need to register at the publishers' web sites.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
