Course Prescription

Studies Pacific genres of oral literature in English translation. Genres include oratory, poetry, tales of creation, folk tales, and proverbs and sayings.

Course Overview

PAC 212 examines Pacific oral literature in English translation, including the ways Pacific genres such as oratory, poetry, creation stories, folktales, and proverbs have influenced and informed Pacific writing in English. In doing so, it provides space for not only engaging with texts in translation but also exploring the ways Pacific knowledges are transmitted, engaged with, analysed, made sense of, and even challenged in the texts Pacific poets, orators, playwrights, novelists, and non-fiction writers are producing in English today. Through engaging with a range of genres, students will not only learn about some of the distinct features of Pacific literatures but will also gain insight into the meanings and insights they provide into Pacific worldviews, past and present.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate an understanding of Pacific Indigenous literatures and knowledges past and present. (Capability 1 and 3)
  2. Identify and reflect on different genres of Pacific literature, both in English translation and written in English. (Capability 3 and 4)
  3. Critically engage in literary analyses of selected texts, identifying Pacific structural elements and meanings. (Capability 3, 4 and 6)
  4. Appy knowledge of Pacific literatures and knowledges by incorporating Pacific poetry, creation stories, folktales, proverbs, etc. into original writing. (Capability 1, 3 and 4)
  5. Engage in discussions about selected texts and their importance, past and present. (Capability 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, each week, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, 1 hour  tutorial, 4-5 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 2-3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities, including tutorials, to complete credit for components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials will not be available as recordings.

The course will include group discussions in lectures and tutorials.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable delivery.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Required readings will be available via Canvas/Reading List from the Library.
