Course Prescription
Course Overview
The objectives of the course are to provide a foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences, professional practice and human behaviour that relate to the practice of pharmacy.
The course comprises two modules:
Module 1 Clinical Pharmacy Practice and Human Behaviour (8 weeks)
Module 2 Pharmaceutical Science (6 weeks)
Teaching will be via a combination of face-to-face activities (including lectures, workshops and laboratories) and online learning activities.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe basic concepts of law, ethics, professionalism, medicines information, clinical communication, medicines management, extemporaneous compounding, human behaviour with respect to wellness and illness, and the use of medicines and cultural competence as they relate to pharmacy (Capability 2.1, 2.2, 3.2, 4.1, 5.2, 6.1 and 6.2)
- Recognise and demonstrate the basic skills and techniques required to extemporaneously compound and dispense basic topical and oral liquid preparations (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 and 5.1)
- Discuss the physicochemical properties of materials used in the design of medicinal dosage forms (Capability 1.1, 1.2 and 2.1)
- Demonstrate application of pharmaceutical principles in the formulation and design of drug delivery systems (Capability 1.1, 1.2 and 2.1)

Minimum pass mark
No less than 45% in any of the individual Introductory modules that contribute to the overall content within each PHARMACY 211 and 212 course, so long as they have achieved an overall pass mark of at least 50% in the entire PHARMACY course in which the module(s) is(are) taught.
Late Assignment and Coursework Submissions, Extensions and Late Penalties
Requests for Extensions for Assessments
Extensions will be considered in exceptional circumstances, where the request is made within a reasonable timeframe* prior to the assignment due date, where evidence is provided (such as a medical/counsellor certificate) and where approved by the Course Director (or nominated Module Leader where relevant).
Assignments received more than one week after the due date or once marked work has already been returned to other students in the class, whichever is earlier, will not be marked and will be graded as “0” or as “not achieved” (if in relation to Experiential Learning Placement coursework and assessments).
* A request for an extension should be submitted at least 24 hours before the due date.
Deductions for Late Assignment Submissions
The deductions will apply (see below) if either the hard copy or Turnitin or Chalk ‘n Wire electronic submission is late, and will be determined by the later submission.
Assessments that are submitted after the deadline will lose marks as follows:
- Up to first 24 hours late: Deduct 10% of the available marks
- 24-48 hours late: Deduct 20% of the available marks
- 48-72 hours late: Deduct 30% of the available marks
- 72-96 hours late: Deduct 40% of the available marks
- 96-120 hours late: Deduct 50% of the available marks

Workload Expectations
This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week on the content.
For this course, you can expect 67 hours of lectures, 37 hours of tutorials, 28 hours of laboratories 68 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 100 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.
Other Information
It is mandatory to bring your own lab coat to the laboratories within this course. Students are also expected to bring a scientific calculator for specific activities.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
