Course Prescription

Surveys the basic principles of lasers and explains how the behaviour and propagation of light can be understood in terms of electromagnetic waves described by Maxwell’s equations. The theory and applications of several key optical components will be described, including lasers and resonators.

Course Overview

This course describes the basic theory of laser operation, the behaviour and characteristics of light as an electromagnetic wave, and the physics behind linear and nonlinear light-matter interactions. For those interested in graduate study, the course is designed as a groundwork course leading to research in applied laser physics and modern optics.
Tutorial sessions will  be used to work through illustrative problems and explore current research being undertaken in the department's laser research labs.

Prerequisite: 15 points from PHYSICS 202, 261 and 15 points from PHYSICS 211, MATHS 253, 260, ENGSCI 211 Restriction: PHYSICS 326

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Articulate and discuss the key components and operation of laser devices (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  2. Describe and discuss how the behavior and characteristics of light can be explained using Maxwell's equations (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  3. An ability to to work with spectral variables and understand their relation to Fourier transformations (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  4. An ability to solve mathematical problems related to the topics, as well as obtain numerical solutions (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  5. Be able to develop a numerical code to model the behaviour of a linear optical resonator (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, a typical weekly workload includes:

  • 1-2 hours of lectures
  • 9-10 hours of reviewing the course content
  • 4 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation

For this course, there are also 6 hours of tutorials across the semester.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including lectures.
Lectures will be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the tests and the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Course was very well received this year, especially the lab tours. Will aim to add more research lab experiences in 2023.
