Course Prescription

Enrolment requires approval of the Head of Department and the choice of subject will depend on staff availability or on the needs of particular students.

Course Overview

Students may choose a one semester research project in theoretical or experimental physics under the guidance of a Research Supervisor. This will attract students who may need an additional 15 points to graduate, or who have a special interest in a research area.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Research, analyse and communicate the results of coursework, or experimental or theoretical physics research project. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)

A 100% research project may be substituted for the 100% coursework.

Special Requirements

Appropriate health and safety training will be available depending upon the nature of a research project.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 8 hours of work on  the actual project or coursework.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected in the laboratory.  Regular meetings with the research supervisor are expected.
Learning activities will include individual reading and discussion with the research supervisor.
The course will not include live online events including.
There is no final exam.  The final mark will be based upon the project report or coursework submitted at the end of the semester.

Student Feedback

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.

At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.

Your feedback helps to improve the course and its delivery for all students.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.
