Course Prescription

Advanced topics in photonics including optical detection, semiconductor and modelocked lasers, the propagation of light in optical fibres, and the physics and applications of nonlinear optics.

Course Overview

 The presentation will assume a knowledge of the material covered in Physics 333. Material from Physics 743 will also be helpful, though not necessary. If you don’t have this background, extra reading will be necessary. Familiarity with the basics of numerical analysis and programming is expected.

The scope of Photonics is very broad and covers everything from the fundamentals of lasers, the propagation of light and its applications. As such the range of material covered changes every year and depends on the interests of both the lecturers and the students. If there is a particular aspect of photonics you would like to learn more about then you can ask to have that included.  

Material covered will include:

Optical fiber modes, optical coupled mode theory, lasers and other stuff including

 Review of χ(2) and χ(3) nonlinear optics, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, solitons.

  2. Understand the applications of optical fibres for remote sensing. (Capability 1, 2 and 4)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, plus appropiate reading time and doing assignments. 

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at all scheduled activities  to receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings if possible. Other learning activities including tutorials will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Materials will be supplied as required.

Student Feedback

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.
