Course Prescription

Studies how and why political organisations such as political parties use business techniques and concepts.

Course Overview

Political Marketing is a cutting edge research-led course which introduces students to how candidates, parties, elected officials and governments around the world utilise marketing concepts and tools win elections and remain in office. It examines a wide range of political marketing topics including the rise of the political consumer, market intelligence and segmentation, market-orientation and strategy, political branding, internal marketing, communications and delivery. It is a future focused course, aiming to develop students' future employability. It is taught through interactive seminars when theoretical ideas are applied to recent and current examples.

Prerequisite: 30 points at Stage II in Politics and International Relations, or 30 points at Stage II in Communication

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Political skills understanding of current issues through discussing current political situations and behaviour (Capability 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3)
  2. Advisory skills impartial neutral analysis and producing high quality reports by evaluating contemporary political behaviour using academic theory rather than personal opinion (Capability 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1 and 3.2)
  3. Analytical skills can project future issues/scenarios through discussions and case study/report assignments (Capability 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3)
  4. Interpersonal skills peer learning through small group work in seminars (Capability 4.3)
  5. Writing skills through report writing (Capability 4.1 and 4.2)
  6. Leadership/teaching skills for those who become discussion leaders (Capability 4.3 and 5.1)
  7. Professional workplace attributes such as reliability, agility, ablity to learn new ideas, able to work independently and respond well to feedback (Capability 5.1 and 5.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.


Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at a live interactive seminar which used small group discussion.

There are no lectures, or lecture recordings. Instead, seminars are a safe space for students to exchange ideas with each other and the convenor. There is a textbook available in ebook form from the library which students use as the foundational resource of literature and theory.

All assignments are 100% coursework completed in the students own time but submitted by a deadline.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Digital Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
