Course Prescription

An examination of the composition, functions and powers of New Zealand's political institutions under MMP. Analyses the extent to which factors such as political leadership, policy, electoral and parliamentary tactics, and relations between the major and minor parties contribute to a government's success.

Course Overview

A postgraduate/advanced NZ politics postgraduate class. Focuses on NZ government from a variety of perspectives including traditional political science and Māori politics viewpoints. Readings (a collection of articles and chapters), kōrero/discussion, and seminar driven.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop an advanced knowledge of NZ government topics (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
  2. Demonstrate skills in oral presentation through running a seminar (Capability 1.1, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
  3. Gain an appreciation of the multi-faceted and complex nature of governing in Aotearoa, including from Māori perspectives (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
  4. Be able to develop an independent and novel research proposal in an NZ/Māori politics topic (Capability 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.2, 5.1, 5.2 and 6.1)
  5. Refine critical reading skills and discussion skills through the seminar-based nature of this course and through the critical reading summaries (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect a 2 hour seminar plus time spent outside class preparing for discussion and assessments. 

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including seminars to be able to complete components of the course.
The course will include live online events including group discussions and seminars.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Digital Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
