Course Overview

This is a course for outstanding students undertaking postgraduate study in Honours and Masters programmes in Public Policy, Politics, and International Relations. The course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply their in-class knowledge in a professional out-of-classroom environment. It will also present a unique opportunity for participating organisations to obtain a project report on a political or policy issue on a topic of interest to them.
Interns are placed with an organisation on an unpaid, part-time basis one day per week during our second semester. In addition to participating in the day-to-day operation and professional activities of the organisation, the students complete a project report for their organisation during their placement. This report counts towards the final grade Interns are awarded for this course.
The day on which the Intern visits the office may be altered if mutually acceptable to both parties. However, it must be one day per week, and include at least eight weeks of attendance, but preferably 10 weeks, as that is what the placement organisation is expecting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop understanding of politics, advocacy and policy analysis.
  2. Communicate through policy writing in a professional environment.
  3. Develop strong interpersonal skills. (Capability 3.1, 5.1 and 5.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including seminars to receive credit for components of the course.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including seminars will not be available as recordings.

The course will not include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.

Attendance on campus is required for the presentation.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

Digital Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
