POPLHLTH 207 : Community and Cultural Development

Course Prescription

An introduction to the study of community and cultural development as both philosophical approach and programme of practice for building active and sustainable communities from grassroots. Real world examples of effective practice will demonstrate the interdependence of theory, research and practice in health development. Emphasis is placed on collaboration and participation.

Course Overview

Our goal in this course is to work together to understand and evaluate the effectiveness of community and cultural development approaches in achieving community and government aspirations. We aim to understand and model good PRAXIS, that is, ascertain the extent to which theory learnt in academic settings can be applied practically in population settings, and how practical action informs our evaluation and understanding of theory. Our invited guests provide examples of praxis in real communities: reflecting and evaluating their successes, challenges, strategies and learning stories.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 4 hours of lectures, 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 4 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including seminars/tutorials to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials/labs will not be available as recordings.
The course will include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.
Attendance on campus is required for the test/exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

No textbook is prescribed for this course but most of the lectures have recommended readings. Students are expected to have perused these readings before the relevant sessions and to be prepared to discuss issues and questions arising from both. The readings have been designed to help students expand their reading on each topic and assist with assignment work. Students are, however, encouraged to read more widely. Student assignments are expected to go well beyond the references listed by staff.
Details of recommended readings will be distributed in the week before each lecture, with electronic copies posted on CANVAS where available.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

  1. Students reported positively about the quality of the course (organisation, clarity of aims, resources available, assessments, intellectually stimulating, frame thinking skills, small group teaching, overall).  
  2. students were particularly positive about the group work and course structure, they stated these were helpful for their learning and enjoyable. They were also very positive about the guest practitioners (engaging and interesting) and resources and guidance (e.g., reading guides, feedback, lecture slides, explanations- described as helpful)
  3. there were some comments about the relative weighting of the assessment components and finding information. We are aiming to streamline and simplify the Canvas page and clarify that there are three main pieces of internal assessment which are broken into smaller components. We have also shifted the weighting of these assignments in response to student feedback. 

Other Information

This course is held at The University of Auckland Grafton Campus. Lectures are at 2-4 pm on Monday and 4-6 pm on Tuesday.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
