Course Prescription

An introduction to principles of critical analysis as applied to theory and practice in counselling, and to basic methodology in research with particular reference to research in counselling.

  • Positioning and relating the role of counsellor to research
  • Finding your topic and developing a 'research question'
  • Searching and critiquing the literature
  • Doing a literature review
  • Methodology and methods
  • Cultural issues in research
  • Ethical considerations in research
  • Qualitative/thematic analysis
  • Quantitative research methods
  • Māori and Pasifika research methodologies
  • The researcher's use of "self"
  • The practicalities of research

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of a range of research approaches relevant to counselling (Capability 2.3)
  2. Demonstrate the ability to find and critique literature in areas of interest related to counselling (Capability 2.3)
  3. Demonstrate ability to plan a research project (Capability 4.1 and 5.3)

To pass this course students must submit all assessments and achieve at least 50% for the overall course

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, with an average of 8 hours per week of reading and thinking about the content and work on assignments.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled lectures to complete the course. Lectures may be available as recordings. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

A larger word count for the first literature review assignment so we have swapped the assignment percentages around to enable this.  

Academic Integrity
