Course Prescription

Develops abilities in sourcing and analysing relevant property data to inform investment and development decisions. Applies the use of a geographic information system (GIS) and cashflow model to a practical, small-scale residential project.

Course Overview

This course introduces students to the decision-making framework for property investment. By the end of this course, students will be able to source, evaluate and present property-specific data using various platforms in order to make informed investments. Concepts and techniques introduced in the course will be supplemented with hands-on workshops guiding students through application of investment and development decisions for a real-world residential project. Students will develop skills in property data analysis using geographic information systems (GIS), cash flow modelling, forecasting and data visualisation. At the conclusion of the course, students will be introduced to recent innovations in property technology (PropTech), the role of technology in decision making and entrepreneurial opportunities in the property sector.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop an understanding of cash flow model capable of informing property investment decision (Capability 1)
  2. Learn and use GIS to solve property-specific problems (Capability 1 and 3)
  3. Research, analyse and communicate investment decision for a residential property (Capability 2, 3 and 4.2)
  4. Understand basic techniques of forecasting property incomes and values (Capability 1)
  5. Become familiar with recent developments in property technology (PropTech) (Capability 1)
  6. Gain awareness of data relevant for property investment (Capability 1)

In order to pass this course you MUST obtain at least 50% of the total marks awarded for the course. In addition, a minimum mark of 45% in the final examination is also expected.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard [15] point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.
