Course Prescription

Property asset management theory through the study of its practical application in the strategic and estate management of property portfolios held in public and private ownership. The role of corporate real estate management in large organisations.

Course Overview

This course aims to provide students with theoretical and practical examples of strategic property management decisions they will face in their careers. An understanding of the dynamic interrelationships between different property management strategies will also be gained. Specialised property management issues will be introduced as they apply to general concepts learned in PROPERTY 231 and other courses. Students will learn to analyse, solve and communicate the solutions to authentic property management problems.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify the value and contribution of property as a strategy to achieve the corporates’ goals (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Make informed decisions and provide advice on corporate real estate in the context of its use for strategic purposes and corporate profitability. (Capability 3 and 4.2)
  3. Develop and apply performance metrics to measure (Capability 1 and 3)
  4. Communicate effective corporate real estate management advice to diverse property stakeholders (Capability 1 and 4.2)
  5. Assess the value of corporate social responsibility in strategic corporate property decisions. (Capability 1 and 6)

In order to pass this course, you MUST obtain at least 50% of the total marks awarded for the course. In addition, a minimum mark of 45% in the final examination is also expected.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, a 2-4 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at some scheduled activities including tutorials/In-class discussion to complete/receive credit for components of the course. Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including guest lecturers/seminars may not be available as recordings, subject to the preference of the guest speakers. The course will not include live online events including group discussions/tutorials. Attendance on campus is required for the test and exam. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Business cases: Cases from various sources, e.g. Harvard Business Publishing will be used for discussion and group assignments throughout the course.
