Course Prescription

Property development and investment practices have significant consequences for economic, social and environmental outcomes. Uses relevant literature to provide a critical analysis of contemporary dynamics and problems in international and national property markets.

Course Overview

The goal of the course is to explore how different stakeholders in property and its related markets can shape the future of property markets and wider economy. The course helps students develop skills to analyse how different stakeholders interact in the complex market system and evaluate the subsequent impact on an economy. The relevant stakeholders include property owners, end users, households, developers, investors, banks, funds, insurers, valuers, government, and state services departments. The course provides students with opportunities to engage with current issues and trends in property and its related markets.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Critically explore the relationship between property and capital markets. (Capability 2.2, 3.1 and 4.1)
  2. Examine driving forces and the role of stakeholders in sustainability of property markets that influence an economy (Capability 2.2, 3.1 and 4.1)
  3. Explain how stakeholders’ responses to market dynamics have led to the global financial crisis (GFC). (Capability 3.1)
  4. Work collaboratively to compose a business report that identifies an issue in the housing market, investigates its social implications and proposes solutions to mitigate the impacts. (Capability 1.1, 6.2 and 7.1)
  5. Critically explore emerging governance concepts and their potential application in the context of urban property markets. (Capability 1.1 and 4.1)
  6. Analyse emerging property trends and their impact on urban and economic growth. (Capability 3.1)

Pass Requirements
In order to pass this course you MUST obtain at least 50% of the total marks awarded for the course. In addition, a minimum mark of 40% in the final examination is also expected.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in.

In each week for this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures, within which include blended online and in-class instructions. You are expected to spend another 7 hours of reading, thinking and self-reflection about course materials. The activities of self-study include reading and preparing for and completing assessments of quizzes, test, assignment and preparing for the exam.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
