Course Prescription

History of land conflicts in New Zealand, Waitangi Tribunal process, and development of portfolio management strategies.

Course Overview

The goals of the course is to demonstrate Maori land development through three case studies of iwi: Ngai Tahu, Waikato-Tainui, and Ngati Whatua. Each iwi represents a journey through colonisation and how land is the centre point of their resistance, renaissance and resilience. 

The course encourages students to respect and embrace different relationships people have with land and property. The course utilises Maori land to demonstrate different worldviews people have towards resources. 

Through research and investigation, the course develops students to have solution seeking capabilities. Student will learn to identify problems particular to Maori land and apply solutions.  The course use students disciplinary knowledge related to the history of Maori land issues in New Zealand, equipping them with an understanding for dealing with Iwi and tribal territories.

Students are expected to attend three compulsory wananga. Held on the marae, each wananga will be over consecutive two days from 10-4pm.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Analyse the implications of historical Maori land tenure system, alienation, stewardship, on modern day Maori land ownership, management and usage. (Capability 1)
  2. Discuss the Waitangi Tribunal and the Treaty claims settlement process and its impact on Maori economic and property development. (Capability 1)
  3. Recognise and describe the significance of tikanga Maori (Maori protocol) when engaging with Maori and Maori organisations; (Capability 1)
  4. Research the history of a Maori land block from its title investigation, registration, ownership and succession through to the present day; (Capability 3)
  5. Critically analyse analyse case studies in contemporary Maori property management and development; and (Capability 2)
  6. Discuss the growing Maori economy and asset base, and how Maori and iwi are increasingly contributing to New Zealand's economy (Capability 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For each module are expected to attend 3 wananga. Each wananga is two days on a marae or area of cultural significance. Wananga make up 36 hours of face to face contact.  Online content and reading make up 60 hours, 54 hours of work on assessments and  essays.

This course is offered in two delivery modes:

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including wananga to receive credit for components of the course.
Wananga will not be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials and workshops will be available as recordings.
The course will include live online events including group discussions/tutorials.
There is no exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as wananga with an optional standard weekly timetable to add extra support.

Online

Attendance is expected at scheduled online activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.
The course will include live online events including group discussions/tutorials and these will be recorded.
Where possible, study material will be released progressively throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.
