Course Prescription

Provides a basic introduction to the structure and function of the brain, neuropsychology, and genetic and hormonal influences on behaviour. This course includes a compulsory laboratory component.

Prerequisite: 30 points at Stage I in Psychology or 15 points from BIOSCI 101, 103

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Describe the cellular mechanisms, gross organization and function of the mammalian central nervous system, and be familiar with its subsystems. (Capability 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)
  2. Demonstrate that you can critically evaluate claims about the roles genes and hormones play in determining human behaviour. (Capability 4 and 5)
  3. Demonstrate an understanding the variety of techniques used to investigate how brain activity subserves behaviour. (Capability 3 and 4)
  4. Understand the nature and neural basis of language, memory, laterality and visual disorders though neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies. (Capability 3, 4 and 5)
  5. Demonstrate understanding of ethical application of this knowledge (Capability 8)

Lab attendance and completion is compulsory.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15-point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15-point course that they are enrolled in. For this course, your week includes approximately 3 hours of lectures,  a 1-hour tutorial, 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 4 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

  • Attendance on campus is required for the exam.
