Course Prescription

Focuses on the application of social psychological knowledge and theory to the understanding of broad social and cultural processes and phenomena, such as violence, prejudice, group behaviour and conflict, intergroup dynamics, collective behaviour, social beliefs, cultural differentiation and contact.

Course Overview

This seminar-based course will focus on specific social psychological theories relating to intergroup relations, political ideology, and prejudice. Students will lead seminars and discussions on set topics in the first half of the course. In the second half, students will develop and present novel research rationales on the topic they find most interesting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of core social psychological theories of prejudice and intergroup relations through discussion and critical analysis. (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Offer applied recommendations for how intergroup relations may be improved, and discuss possible barriers to how improvement can be achieved. (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  3. Develop a rationale for novel research on prejudice and/or discrimination based on one or more of the theoretical perspectives covered in the course. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of different research designs commonly used in research on intergroup relations and prejudice by proposing and critically evaluating research designs. (Capability 1, 2 and 3)

Tuākana

This course is supported by the Tuākana in Science Programme, which facilitates the success and wellbeing of our Māori and Pacific students. The foundation of the Tuākana Programme is the Tuākana-Teina principle an integral relationship in which older or more expert Tuākana (traditionally brother, sister or cousin) guides a younger or less expert Teina (traditionally younger sibling or cousin). Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, and approximately 5 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 3 hours of work on assignments per week.

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including lectures/seminars to receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures/seminars will be available as recordings. 
The course will not include live online events.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
