Course Prescription

Focuses on the identification, assessment and treatment of early emotional and behavioural problems and their link to the child’s family and preschool environments.

Course Overview

Effective treatment of infant and early childhood mental health relies on the accurate assessment of an infant’s emerging competencies within the context of the family and the child’s early environments.  The focus of Part A will be the developmental assessment of infants and preschool children and how the family environment can support or interfere with development during early childhood.

Prerequisite: PSYCHIAT 740, 747, 768, or equivalent Restriction: PSYCHIAT 771, 772 To complete this course students must enrol in PSYCHIAT 730 A and B, or PSYCHIAT 730

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Discuss the theoretical foundations for infant, toddler and preschool mental health and related research supporting these foundations. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1 and 6.2)
  2. Describe the developmental milestones of children 0 to 5 years of age. These will include social-emotional competencies, language, gross and fine motor skills.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to use one or more standardized screeners of child development to detect a developmental delay in children aged 0 to 5.
  4. Describe the importance of attachment for early and later development.
  5. Discuss how early "toxic" environments can affect brain development and ongoing health and child development.

There is no final exam. Final grade is based on the coursework.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 12 hours of lectures, a 3 hour tutorial, 40 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 95 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Online

Attendance is expected at scheduled lectures to complete components of the course.
The course will include live online events including group discussions and lectures and these will be recorded.Where possible, study material will be released progressively throughout the course.
This course runs to the University semester/quarter timetable and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.
