Course Prescription

Wairua is multi-faceted and central to holistic wellbeing. This course privileges Mātauranga Māori in the exploration of wairua and wellbeing and will provide a strong foundation for working with Māori. Students engage with topics relevant to indigenous cultural considerations in psychological research and practice. Includes self-reflection and group work in a wānaga/noho marae setting.

Course Overview

This is a Mātauranga Māori, seminar based programme with a Mihi Whakatau and Poroaki component in which students will be given the opportunity to expand their knowledge of wairua and the interconnection with wellbeing. Students will also reflect upon Indigenous cultural considerations in relation to psychological research and practice, part of which is community engagement. The knowledge and experience gained in this course will provide a foundation for working with Māori.

There are no tutorial streams for this course, all MPI students enrolled in this course will be invited to join the MPPRG (Māori and Pacific Psychology Research Group) formed to support MP PG students.

Workload Expectations

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of seminars per week,  102 hours of  hours of reading and thinking about the content and  working on assignments across the semester, and 24 hours taking part in a noho Marae experience.

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities, including seminars, to complete components of the course.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable with including the Mihi Whakatau and Poroaki which will be in community settings off campus.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.
