Course Prescription

A study of the science of behaviour analysis that helps students to understand and articulate the core principles of behaviour, the philosophy of behaviourism, and the interaction between experimental and applied research. The course introduces core approaches and concepts in behaviour analysis such as reinforcement, stimulus control, measurement, small-N design, and radical behaviourism. The underlying approach to understanding behaviour is constructional.

Course Overview

This course is recommended to be taken in conjunction with PSYCHOL 703. In this course, we focus on the technical skills that you need to effectively identify, measure, and assess causes of behaviour, and the effectiveness of interventions. This course provides foundational knowledge for those seeking a career in behaviour analysis.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate advanced theoretical knowledge in the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of behaviour analysis (Capability 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8)
  2. Analyse the quality of research underpinning applications of behavioural principles and tactics to clinical problems. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  3. Describe how behavioural principles and tactics are used to change behaviour. (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30-point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week.

For this course, you can expect 48 hours of lectures, 72 hours of preparatory reading, 100 hours conducting projects (including in community), and 80 hours of assessed self-study.
