REGDEV 702 : Regional Regeneration and Wellbeing

Course Prescription

Examines how education provides a basis for rethinking regional development, community wellbeing and sustainability in an increasingly globalised world. The course explores the significance to community regeneration of indigenous and local knowledge, via mātauranga Māori, place-based learning, public pedagogy and the promotion of educational pathways, as well as how these traverse and intersect the local and the global.

Course Overview

In this course, you will explore – in a supportive environment – how education provides a basis for rethinking regional development, community wellbeing and sustainability in an increasingly globalised world. We meet over four Saturdays during the semester. In session one, we provide an overview of regional wellbeing and Indigenous/mātauranga approaches to wellbeing. Session two explores public pedagogy and place-based learning. In session three, we discuss community/arts/NGO regional initiatives, before turning to rangatahi, youth involvement and resilience in the final session.

The course involves five assignments and no exam. Assignments 1 and 2 are reflective essays (500 and 1,000 words respectively). Assignment 3 is an annotated bibliography and Assignment 4 is a PowerPoint presentation. Assignments 3 and 4 will scaffold you towards Assignment 5 – a project proposal. Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Recognise, describe and account for how regions can foster social and community wellbeing, particularly for vulnerable groups (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  2. Examine the role of education and the arts as key catalysts for community regeneration and wellbeing (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  3. Apply key concepts from placed-based learning, and public pedagogy to relevant issues of community wellbeing in contemporary regional economies and societies (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  4. Explore the concepts underpinning community and iwi wellbeing in Aotearoa New Zealand in relation to mātauranga Māori and related Indigenous knowledge systems, along with their application in policy and practice (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  5. Apply techniques for analysing and interpreting regional regeneration and wellbeing initiatives in contemporary regions (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  6. Debate with others the value of different approaches to regional regeneration and wellbeing in Aotearoa New Zealand and elsewhere (Capability 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)

To pass this course students must submit all assessments and achieve at least 50% for the overall course.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 36 hours of lectures, 14 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 100 hours of online directed study tasks and assessed self-study.

This course is offered in two delivery modes:

Campus Experience (for those based in, or wishing to travel to, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland)

Attendance is required at scheduled activities to complete components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings. 
The activities for the course are scheduled as a block delivery.

Online (for those based in other regions)

Attendance is required at scheduled online activities to complete components of the course.
The course will include live online events and these will be recorded.
This course runs to the University semester and all the associated completion dates and deadlines will apply.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

REGDEV 702 will be taught for the first time in 2024, thus no student feedback has been collected to date.
