SCISCHOL 201 : Introduction to Science and Innovation

Course Prescription

An exploration of issues affecting Science in Society, including governance, funding and policies. Students will also explore the development of modern scientific method and the challenges of engaging in scientific research.

Course Overview

The course is part of the second year Science Scholars programme.  SCISCHOL 202 is focused primarily on exploring the role of disciplines within science and the process of Innovation used from discovery to opportunities for application and impact. 

Students learn the underpinning of disciplines within science and the boundaries and opportunities for collaboration and crossover among disciplines, including the concepts of epistemology and onotology, as well as cross, multi, inter and trans-disciplinarity

Processes of innovation, diffusion, and impact are investigated, allowing students to understand how research can evolve to practice, application and foundational knowledge.  Students will complete a group project focused on delivering an innovation to an end point from which it can be evaluated for further consideration or continued evolution towards practice and commercialisation.

Students engage in dialogue and debates, and work individually and in groups to explore the topics in this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Explain the importance of scientific disciplines, the context of disciplinarity, and the boundaries of and amongst disciplines within and outside of science. (Capability 1 and 2)
  2. Evaluate innovation processes and describe how these can be applied to scientific knowledge and discovery to solve complex problems and address challenges. (Capability 2, 3, 4 and 6)
  3. Describe lessons and approaches from researchers work and discoveries and then use these to help inform your own development and thinking about your research. (Capability 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This is equivalent to a 7.5 point course, where students are expected to spend 6 hours per week involved in each part of the course.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of face-to-face time (primarily lectures & discussion) and 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 2 hours of work on assignments, projects or reflections.

Learning Resources

There is no textbook for this course, but readings (scientific and popular) and videos will be assigned in preparation for class discussion, assignments, and projects.

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.

At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
