SCREEN 302 : Fiction Filmmaking

Course Prescription

Focuses on creating scripted, dramatic narratives for screen. Students will learn how to analyse and break down a script in pre-production, undertake specific on-set roles and protocols and apply advanced techniques in production and post-production in practical filmmaking.

Course Overview

SCREEN 302 is a course centred on creating scripted, dramatic narratives.
Building on the work done at Stage 2 screen students will look at such things as analysing and breaking down scripts, on set protocols, aspects of pre-production and more advanced technical techniques in production and post production. This course does not cover screenwriting but rather builds understanding on how to analyse a script for narrative themes and how to bring them to the screen
This will be an intensive practical course with emphasis on the doing aspect of film making in workshop style classes. We will cover theory and techniques in class discussions and put them into immediate practice with targeted practical exercises.
Assignments will be creative and practice based.
The course comprises of lectures, discussions, screenings, exercises and three key creative projects demonstrating lessons learned. Assessment is based on participation and three practical assignments utilising the techniques learnt in lectures and workshops.
Course Objectives:
• students will build on their understanding of the fundamentals of production techniques in narrative storytelling for screen
• students will achieve advanced familiarity with camera, editing, lighting and sound techniques and software
• students will refine and strengthen collaborative working skills and ways to receive and provide constructive criticism
• students will develop three projects from concept to completion that expose them to the different techniques of cinematic storytelling

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Build on their understanding of the fundamentals of production techniques in narrative storytelling for screen (Capability 1.1, 1.2 and 2.3)
  2. Develop and demonstrate advanced familiarity with camera, editing, lighting and sound techniques and software (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.3 and 5.2)
  3. Refine and strengthen collaborative working skills and ways to receive and provide constructive criticism (Capability 4.2 and 4.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 3 hours of lectures and tutorials and 7 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities  to complete and receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
