Course Prescription

An introduction to a range of theories and models of practice in social work and their application to a variety of social work settings, including an exploration of personal and professional values within the framework of relevant codes of ethics, cultural practice and the importance of professional supervision. To be studied concurrently with SOCWORK 213.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of of theoretical approaches, models, and knowledges relevant to effective bicultural social work practice in Aotearoa New Zealand (Capability 1.2, 2.2, 2.3 and 6.1)
  2. Examine the role of theory in effective bicultural and multicultural social work relationships (Capability 1.2, 2.2, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 6.1 and 6.2)
  3. Demonstrate ability to explain the role of theory in critically understanding the relationships between social work practice and the socio-political context in which it is embedded. (Capability 1.1 and 1.2)
  4. Apply selected theoretical approaches appropriately to social work practice. (Capability 1.2, 2.3 and 3.2)

To pass this course students must submit all assessments and gain an overall course mark of at least 50%. Completion to the satisfaction of the examiner/s.

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 36 hours of lectures, 57 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 57 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Academic Integrity
