Course Prescription

Provides a solid grounding in the basic grammar and vocabulary of Spanish for beginners or near beginners, emphasising communicative competence in the present tense. Develops speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and prepares students at the A1 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Course Overview

This course is for students who have no previous knowledge of the Spanish language, that is, true beginners. It helps them acquire basic linguistic structures and develop conversational competence. The four language skills ―speaking, listening, reading, and writing― and knowledge of the cultures and traditions of Spain and Spanish America are integrated into the three class hours per week. Language learning is reinforced through in-class practice, audio-visual activities, aural and reading comprehensions, homework assignments, and independent work using a richly populated course website. Attendance at all lectures is strongly recommended in order to benefit from interactive activities which help develop communicative skills and ensure steady progress.

There is extensive exposure to Spanish in class so that students become acquainted with its sounds and rhythm and start building the vocabulary and grammar they need to express themselves in this language. We begin by learning how to greet people, introduce ourselves, and provide basic personal information such as occupation, nationality, and phone number. We journey through the Spanish-speaking world to discover how to talk about locations (e.g. the city and house where we live and the place where we work) and how to give and ask for directions to go from one place to another. We then learn to talk about the food we like and how to order it at a restaurant, how to describe the physical appearance of people as well as their personality, and to narrate the activities of our daily routine. Lastly, we learn how to shop for food and clothing and to describe what people are wearing.

Class activities include interaction in pairs, small groups, or with the whole class. Regular, active participation is therefore expected in class, and must be accompanied by a clear commitment to independent learning and preparation. As a Blended Learning course, students are expected to work independently with specifically designed online materials on a weekly basis.

  4. Express likes and dislikes in Spanish regarding topics such as food, hobbies, sports, and cultural activities. (Capability 1, 3 and 6)
  5. Describe the physical appearance and personality of people in Spanish. (Capability 1, 3 and 6)
  6. Narrate orally or in writing activities of daily life in Spanish. (Capability 1, 3 and 6)
  7. Interact with a salesperson in Spanish when buying clothing items or with a waiter at a restaurant when ordering food. (Capability 1, 3 and 6)

Workload Expectations

As this is a 15-point course, students are expected to devote 10 hours per week to it. Each week, there are three face-to-face hours in which students engage in interactive activities with their teacher and with their classmates. The remaining seven hours per week are for independent study using custom-made materials that are available on Canvas. Independent study includes reviewing the PowerPoint slides provided for each class, answering review questions, doing the workbook exercises, doing multiple choice exercises, listening to audio clips for activities in the textbook and workbook, watching video episodes related to the content of the course, practicing vocabulary, and completing the cultural module accompanying each unit covered in the course.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

This course is NOT available for students studying remotely, outside Auckland or offshore in 2024.
Attendance is required at scheduled class activities to receive credit for some components of the course.
Attendance on campus is required for tests and exams.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Prescribed Textbook:
Nuevo Ven 1. Libro del Alumno. In SPANISH 104, we cover Unidades 1-7. You will cover Unidades 8-15 in SPANISH 105.

Prescribed Workbook:
Nuevo Ven 1. Workbook (Unidades 1-7). The answers to the questions are provided on pages 62-64 so that you can check the accuracy of your work.
Bring your textbook and workbook to class, as you will use them regularly.

Course website:
Access the course website through CANVAS. There you will find additional materials to complement the textbook and workbook. For each unit we will cover, there are PowerPoint slides, review questions, practice quizzes, audio, video, vocabulary lists, cultural modules, and links to online dictionaries.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

The course is regularly updated to incorporate student feedback.
