Course Prescription

Consolidates Spanish study by introducing the present subjunctive, enables students to move toward fluency in conversations on contemporary topics, and enriches daily activities with detail, subtlety and idioms used in the context of the rich cultures of the Hispanic world (Spain and Latin America). This course is equivalent to B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Course Overview

This course continues the systematic study of Spanish grammar and vocabulary focusing on four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. It prepares students to hold conversations on contemporary topics and to deal with the necessities of daily life.
Structures to be introduced and practiced include the past tenses of the indicative, the present subjunctive, the conditional, the imperative, impersonal forms, indirect speech, and idioms that are used in everyday situations. In the context of language acquisition, the rich culture of the Hispanic world (Spanish and Latin American) is studied using music, media articles, and YouTube videos on topics related to contemporary life. This is the first part of the intermediate Spanish level, which continues with SPANISH 201. This course is equivalent to B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Prerequisite: SPANISH 105 or 178 Restriction: SPANISH 277. May not be taken if a more advanced language acquisition course in this subject has previously been passed

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Narrate orally or in writing past events using the various tenses of the indicative mood appropriately. (Capability 3 and 6)
  2. Discuss activities that will take place in the future. (Capability 3 and 6)
  3. Express personal opinions using the tenses of the subjunctive mood. (Capability 1, 3 and 6)
  4. Make hypotheses about possible events and indicate their probability. (Capability 3 and 6)
  5. Report on what other people have said using the structures of indirect speech. (Capability 1, 3 and 6)
  6. Express wishes, recommendations, regrets, and conjectures. (Capability 3 and 6)
  7. Demonstrate a more advance understanding of Spanish language and culture. (Capability 3 and 6)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course. As such, students are expected to spend 10 hours per week on it, including class time, personal study, and assignment preparation.

Campus Experience

This course is NOT available for students studying remotely, outside Auckland or offshore in 2025.

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including tutorials to complete components of the course.
Attendance on campus is required for the tests.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
