Course Prescription

Examines health education and physical education in primary and secondary school contexts. Develops knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum, and programming. Critically examines how contemporary issues in the fields of health, sport and physical education impact schools.

Course Overview

The course challenges you to reflect on why Health and PE are relevant to contemporary schooling in New Zealand. By the end of the course you will able to understand the current curriculum in HPE, identify some of the issues and innovations driving change, understand different teaching approaches, and examine pedagogies relevant to quality practice.   The course is divided into two sections. The first is focussed broadly on curriculum and the issues that influence curriculum change.  The section section focusses on pedagogy and examines innovative ideas and practices that are important to making the learning area relevant, future-focussed and effective.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the Curriculum for Health and Physical Education in schools (Capability 1.3, 2.1 and 3.1)
  2. Critically reflect on the nature of future oriented Health and Physical Education programmes in schools (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1 and 6.1)
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of of effective pedagogies in Health and Physical Education (Capability 1.3, 2.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, 8.1 and 8.2)

 To pass this course you must achieve at least 50% for the course overall.

Workload Expectations

For this 15-point course you should expect to commit 36 hours to delivery of the course. You can also reasonably expect to commit approximately 100-120 hours to independent learning. This may include reading (and more reading), note-taking, face-to-face and/or online discussion, writing, engaging in collaborative group work, problem solving, undertaking practical tasks, reflecting on learning, accessing learning and study resources, and assignment, test and/or exam preparation and completion

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is expected at scheduled activities including lectures and tutorials to components of the course. Lectures may be available as recordings if delivered in a lecture enabled room. Other learning activities including tutorials will not be available as recordings.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable and will involve some activity in gym-based settings

Learning Resources

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Please remember that the recording of any class on a personal device requires the permission of the instructor.

Student Feedback

At the end of every semester students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback and respond with summaries and actions.

Your feedback helps teachers to improve the course and its delivery for future students.

Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the department and faculty staff-student consultative committees.

  • Learning will be contextualised in practical, gym-based activities each week.
  • Additional ways of supporting learning, such as weekly tests or more regular submission on learning portfolios will be considered.

Academic Integrity
