### Course Prescription

An advanced introduction to statistics and data analysis, including testing, estimation, and linear regression.

### Course Overview

STATS 707 is a systematic introduction to statistics and data analysis aimed at graduate students from other disciplines who have some computational experience. The course aims to cover basic concepts and methods of classic statistical inference. Topics include, introduction to probability; hypothesis testing; point and interval estimation; two-sample and k-sample comparisons; linear regression; chi-squared test.

Prerequisite: 15 points from STATS 101, 108 and 15 points from COMPSCI 101, MATHS 162 Restriction: BIOSCI 209, STATS 201, 207, 208, 210, 225

### Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify and describe for an experimental study, identify the experiment, sample and relevant events and calculate the probabilities of relevant events. (Capability 1)
2. Understand and describe an experiment by a probability model and define random variables (and their parameters) which are involved in the model. (Capability 3)
3. Formulate a hypothesis testing problem and create the course of action for it. (Capability 1)
4. Evaluate and make inference about the characteristics of different statistical populations. (Capability 2 and 4)
5. Build linear models and study their properties. (Capability 1)

### Special Requirements

This course is a standard [15] point course and students are expected to spend 150 hours over the course of the semester involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, during the semester you can expect around 48 hours of lectures, 42 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 60 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

### Delivery Mode

#### Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including the midterm test to receive credit for components of the course.
Lectures will be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the test and exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Handouts will be distributed to students during the lectures.
