# STATS 708 : Topics in Statistical Education

### Course Prescription

Covers a wide range of research in statistics education at the school and tertiary level. There will be a consideration of, and an examination of, the issues involved in statistics education in the curriculum, teaching, learning, technology and assessment areas.

### Course Overview

STATS 708 covers a wide range of New Zealand and international research in statistics education at the school and tertiary level. The focus is on how probability, statistics, and statistical literacy can be effectively taught and learned. Theories and ideas from the research are critically examined, discussed and developed. Consideration of issues involved in learning statistics and probability are examined through research literature discussions, practical applications for the classroom including computer-based activities, and lectures.
By the end of STATS 708, students should be able to state, and argue coherently for, their perspective on statistics education: how and why specific teaching and learning strategies should be used; the implications of research for teaching and learning; the relationship between statistical learning and assessment; and so forth.
This course will be beneficial for all statistics students, especially those intending to pursue an academic career or a career in teaching.

### Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe an assessment item that was trialled on students and justify findings in relation to research knowledge on students' statistical reasoning. (Capability 1 and 4)
2. Communicate effectively to an audience, using technology and audience participation, a scholarly account of research conducted in a specific area of statistics education research. (Capability 4)
3. Critically evaluate and synthesise research articles including questioning research findings and posing thought-provoking questions. (Capability 2 and 4)
4. Critically evaluate and synthesise at least five self-selected significant articles, reflect on these articles and produce a logically-structured argument. (Capability 4 and 5)

### Special Requirements

Lectures are 4pm-7pm.

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 150 hours per semester involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, each week you can expect 3 hours of lectures, 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 7.5 hours of work on assessment preparation and completion.

#### Campus Experience

This course is available for remote students.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
Online office hours (Zoom) will be arranged as the need arises.

### Student Feedback

During the course Class Representatives in each class can take feedback to the staff responsible for the course and staff-student consultative committees.

At the end of the course students will be invited to give feedback on the course and teaching through a tool called SET or Qualtrics. The lecturers and course co-ordinators will consider all feedback.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Level 2: You will not be required to attend in person. All teaching and assessment will have a remote option.
