### Course Prescription

An introduction to ideas of importance in medical statistics, such as measures of risk, basic types of medical study, causation, ethical issues and censoring, together with a review of common methodologies.

### Course Overview

This course provides a broad introduction to ideas of importance in medical statistics, such as measures of risk, basic types of medical study, causation, ethical issues, and censoring, together with a review of common methodologies. The goal is to go from questions about health to quantitative questions about data, and potentially to answers. Topics studied include: summaries of risk and health and their implications, confounding and causation, screening and diagnostic testing, estimation and study designs.  The course is compulsory for students taking the MSc in Medical Statistics, and is valuable for statisticians with an interest in medical and public health applications.  These skills can be applied to careers in medical research or in government public health agencies,

Prerequisite: 15 points from BIOSCI 209, STATS 201, 207, 208 and 15 points from STATS 210, 225, 707

### Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Recommend appropriate analytical methods to analyse data from various medical studies. (Capability 1, 2, 3 and 4)
2. Describe the key characteristics of each type of medical study, and understand the strengths and limitations of each study design. (Capability 1 and 2)
3. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues in medical studies. (Capability 1)
4. Summarise methods that can be used to assess disease risk. (Capability 1, 2 and 3)
5. Understand the effects of confounding and their impacts on the analyses. (Capability 1 and 2)
6. Understand causal diagrams and be able to draw them. (Capability 1, 2 and 3)

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 150 hours per semester involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect about 3 hours of lectures, 3 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 6 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation per week.

Lectures will be available as recordings. Other learning activities  will not be available as recordings.
The course will not include live online events.
Attendance on campus is required for the test and exam.
The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.
