Course Prescription

Study of a particular theme, religious tradition or set of texts from within the discipline of Theological and Religious Studies.

Course Overview

Religion and Religious Identity in the State of Israel
In this course we will examine the role of religion and religious practice in Israeli society. We will explore religious beliefs and institutions and attempt to make sense of Israeli and Jewish cultural systems. Following in the footsteps of the anthropologist, Clifford Geertz, we will examine clusters of symbols that represent values, ideas and lifestyles. We will discover how religious traditions have impacted social and political institutions such as the courts, education ministry and local economy. Students will take part in a weekly debate on topics such as Jewish identity, state versus religion, ethnicity, and education. We will examine religious values that gave birth to the evolution of a new religious fundamentalism in Israel and try and place Zionism and Messianic movements within Israeli politics.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical perspectives, methods and data used by anthropologists and religious scholars (Capability 1.1)
  2. Critically evaluate how that perspective can be applied to a range of issues to do with religious identity in Israel, New Zealand and around the world (Capability 2.1)
  3. Conduct research on topics to do with Religion and religious identity (Capability 3.2)
  4. Write coherently about topics to do with religion and religious identity (Capability 4.1)
  5. Improve general academic debating and presentation skills (Capability 4.2)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, an hour workshop each week, and 2 hours of reading and writing about the content per week.
