TRANSLAT 718 : Japanese Specialised Translation

Course Prescription

Develops students’ competence in understanding and producing specialised texts in English and Japanese. Translate materials in a variety of subject areas, such as trade, tourism, science, medicine or finance, and in different text types. Emphasis is on longer texts that require the acquisition of subject knowledge and in-depth terminology research. Introduced to professional ethics.

Course Overview

The course is designed to develop translator competence – which includes linguistic, intercultural, documentary, technological/ instrumental, transfer, thematic, industry-related and ethical competencies – within semi-specialised and specialised knowledge domains. You will acquire the skills required for translating into your declared language direction (80% of the coursework into your selected first language and 20% into your selected second language) through extensive exposure to authentic translation materials in both languages. Texts will be chosen from: literature/culture, industry, finance, commercial correspondence, scientific, technical and selective translation of official certificates.
 
Lessons are interactive, with opportunities for practice in pairs, small groups or the whole class. Attendance at all lectures is strongly recommended in order to benefit from interactive activities which help develop translation skills and ensure steady progress.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Develop and demonstrate key competences to be able to translate a variety of semi-specialised and specialised texts at an advanced level (Capability 1.2 and 3.1)
  2. Enhance autonomy in conducting necessary background research and generating terminological resources (Capability 2.2 and 3.2)
  3. Acquire reflective attitudes towards one's own translation work (Capability 2.3 and 5.2)
  4. Understand how to review and critique translations done by others (Capability 2.1, 4.3 and 5.1)
  5. Apply ethical decision-making in all phases of the translation process (Capability 2.3, 3.1 and 6.3)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 30 point course and students are expected to spend 20 hours per week on each 30 point course that they are enrolled in, including class time and personal study and assignment preparation.

All timetabled lectures will be recorded and available via Canvas.

Attendance is required at scheduled tutorials / seminars / discussion classes to receive credit for some components of the course.

The course includes an on-line tutorial / seminar / discussion class stream.

The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).
