Course Overview

Individual 5,000 word research project into an aspect or urban design. The key aims of the course are:

Develop research skills applied to urban design in terms of contextual understanding of issues, identifying a research question for investigation, and identifying relevant literature.

Demonstrate ability to critically evaluate relevant literature and information, and correctly reference source material.

Engage in research, analysis and argue from evidence. Report and effectively communicate findings in a professional context

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Undertake an investigation of an urban design issue (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.2, 3.1, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1 and 6.2)
  2. Critically analysis to a research issue to enhance understanding of urban design (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
  3. Apply research skills argued from evidence leading to well-argued findings and conclusions (Capability 1.3, 2.3, 3.3, 4.3, 5.1 and 6.3)
  4. Communicate the findings in a professional context through a written report (Capability 1.3, 2.3, 4.2, 5.3 and 6.3)

Pass Requirements 50% as per University grading policy. You must submit all the course work to pass this course. Where a student has been unable to attend to their studies for a period of time in the semester they may apply for an Extension of Time. Coursework not received by the due date, and for which no extension of time has been approved, will receive the grade ‘DNC’ (Did Not Complete). 

Requests for extensions of time must be submitted and approved before the due date unless there are exceptional circumstances. Students applying for an extension of time must obtain an Extension of Time Form for Coursework Submission from the School of Architecture and Planning Oce (6th Floor of the Architecture Building, Building 421, 26 Symonds Street) and complete the required details. Late submission forms must be accompanied with the appropriate sign by faculty staff

Teaching & Learning Methods

Self directed learning with supervision. Supervision times will be arranged for supervisions as times to be agreed. The rst meeting will be held within the rst weeks of the semester, to clarify and approve topics. An initial date for meeting as a group will be advised during the rst week of the semester using email address in the canvas system

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 15 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in. For this course, you can expect 10 hours o supervision and support and 140 hours of reading and thinking about the content and working on your report.

Academic Integrity
